CHURCH HISTORY

Norbeck Community Church started in the home of Thomas G. and Evelyn V. Bond, both natives of the Norbeck Community, on March 23, 1975.  Services were held in the basement of the Bond’s home, they provided a ride for the members who did not have transportation, and food for those who attended.

Shortly after starting this new church, Dr. Steven L. Sragner as well as Mr. and Mrs. Bond donated the land for the church’s present location; 2631 Norbeck Road, Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1980 members brought their collective resources together and began building our current church home.  Many local business joined in on this endeavor.  Two in particular; brothers Clifton and Chester Hammond, worked endlessly to help realize this vision.  Chester later served as a Deacon. Hazel Hammond, the wife of Clifton Hammond served as an active and avid member of Norbeck Church until her health would no longer permit her to do so.

Though they were small in number, the church was full of people that had hope and faith that the Norbeck Community Church would be a success. Faith is what made the vision of Thomas, Evelyn and the others a reality, and today we are still walking by faith and growing.

Since moving into the new building in 1982, the congregation has worked to move the ministry upward and onward. That wonderful team spirit is still present in the Norbeck Community Church today!  Under the progressive leadership of Rev. Courtenay L. Miller who has served as Pastor since 1998, Norbeck has undergone internal and external renovations and additional land has been secured for church expansion.  The congregation has increased tremendously and Norbeck continues to be the “church in the community with the community at heart!”
